Fortinet ousts rivals from Oxford University

UTM vendor completes nine deployments at prestigious university in tandem with partner LAN3

Vendor Fortinet and partner LAN3 have bagged an end-to-end security deal with the University of Oxford, dislodging a raft of rival vendors – including Cisco and Oracle – in the process.

The contract takes in seven of the university's colleges as well as the Ashmolean Museum and the central Business Services & Projects department.

Somerville College is one of the colleges involved and is replacing its existing Cisco solution with Fortinet's FortiGate-3016B network security appliance. It also added an IPS module that will replace its previous investments in Tipping Point and Websense.

Meanwhile, the university's Business Services & Projects department has rolled out Fortinet's FortiDB database security offering, replacing its previous Oracle A&M solution which it branded "expensive".

"Fortinet has a worldwide reputation in the education sector, so it is fitting that IT professionals within an illustrious institution such as Oxford University also place their trust in our technology," said Paul Judd, regional director UKIZA at Fortinet (pictured).

"These nine deployments across Oxford University illustrate how our end-to-end security suite is addressing the needs of demanding multi-Gigabit environments that counter multiple, blended-threat vectors with a very intelligent approach."
