Dixons Carphone hit by cyberattack

Some 2.4 million customers' details - including credit card info - may have been accessed

Millions of Dixons Carphone customers' personal information – such as names, addresses and credit card details – may have been compromised after its Carphone Warehouse arm was hacked over the weekend.

The retailer released a statement admitting a "sophisticated" cyberattack affected its Carphone Warehouse customers as well as a number of websites associated with it.

Names, addresses, dates of birth and bank details of 2.4 million customers may have been accessed, and encrypted credit card data of up to 90,000 customers may also have been hacked.

The firm claims that on discovering the hack, it took "immediate action" to secure its systems and investigated the problem with a "leading cybersecurity firm" straight away.

Affected customers are being contacted.

Dixons Carphone chief executive Sebastian James apologised.

"We take the security of customer data extremely seriously, and we are very sorry that people have been affected by this attack on our systems," he said. "We are, of course, informing anyone who may have been affected, and have put in place additional security measures."
