HP plays the long game
HP's investment into UK higher education points to a firm planning for the future, despite recent bashing from IBM, says Doug Woodburn
IBM boss Sam Palmisano recently slapped down HP for scrimping on research and development, telling the Wall Street Journal: “HP used to be a very inventive company.”
HP may have ploughed $700m less into R&D last year than in 2005, but its reputation for innovation will only be bolstered by news that it is making a big investment in UK higher education.
HP already works closely with Bucks New University and the University of the West of England (UWE), the latter of which will launch an HP-centric degree next year.
HP said it plans to forge strategic ties with up to four more UK universities, with some relationships focusing on R&D.
VARs are crying out for graduates with hands-on experience, and the UWE degree includes a one-year internship, either at HP or a partner. The course will also feature guest lectures from top HP luminaries such as Nick Wilson.
Although only 30 students may enrol in its first year, HP has plans to grow the scheme through distance learning and the channel is certain to benefit in the long term.
