YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHOUT!

I've just read on a BBC web site how a New Zealand woman was fired because of her tendancy to use capital letters in emails.

The BBC story is asking why people get so irritated about capital letters - but I can understand why.

It appears the person writing the email is actually shouting at you and does come across as quite aggressive. I only use caps when I REALLY want to emphasise something.

But did someone deserve to lose their job? Surely a quiet word in their ear would have been much better than a P45 landing on the desk?

One thing I need to stop doing personally is including so many exclamation marks in my emails. It irritates me to death so God knows what everbody else thinks of them.

It is a bad habit that I shouldn't be doing as a journalist - but one which just seems to take over whenever I type an email.
