Channel set to land Olympic gold

The 2012 Olympic Games could become a cash cow for the channel following the launch of a government web site dedicated to encourage smaller suppliers to tender for contracts.

Aimed at all sectors of the market, including IT, the London 2012 Business Network, launched by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and London Organising Committee, is predicting more than £6bn worth of work with over 75,000 contracts up for grabs in the run-up to the Games.
The Network has three main parts: information on upcoming opportunities; business events; and the CompeteFor service, which matches companies to available contracts.
An ODA representative told CRN: “This is all about supply chain opportunities and working with the contractors for those opportunities. IT will play a major part in this as it is a huge sector.”
Simon Briault, representative for the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “This is good news for SMEs although there is a danger that the contracts could still go through the normal supply chains. The acid test will be whether the sub-contracting opportunities will come the way of firms that have registered.”
Mike Gammie, IT services development manager at Misco, said: “This is going to be a huge opportunity for the IT channel. We will definitely be taking advantage of it.”
