Wap service targets mobile workforce

Norweb has become the latest company to offer a Wap service to resellers with the launch of Assign.

Alan Stokes, product manager for Assign, said the service is aimed at giving mobile workers the ability to access office tools remotely. "It gives users access to scheduling, contacts and email with real-time information while on the move," he said.

The company is offering customers the ability to access Assign with limited investment. "We offer a fully hosted service and all the customer needs is a handset," said Stokes, adding that this also saves money on infrastructure investment.

Assign offers doubled security with encryption and authentication. "We do not expose users to any security risks," he said.

But according to John Newlyn, business development manager at Attachmate, securing any Wap application will leave its mark. "With any outward connection there is a security risk. Companies must find a balance between 100 per cent productivity and no security, and 100 per cent security with no productivity," he said.

Stokes described how services can be run through current systems with Assign, adding mobile access to an established network.

James Barrett, technical operations manager at reseller Axial, believes that this type of text service can be helpful to certain businesses. "It is very useful when text-based information can be moved around," he said.
