Internet software vendor Novell is partnering with Compaq to deliver an ambitious joint training initiative to the channel.

The two companies will work with more than 40 selected 'education partners' across EMEA, including Landis, Informatics Group, Interquad, Xpertise, Azlan and Carain in the UK.

The programme, called Novell NetWare 6 First Class, aims to train up to 10,000 people, including 600 in the UK, on Novell's forthcoming NetWare 6 operating system and Compaq's NetWare clustering and storage software before the end of December. NetWare 6 is due for release towards the end of this year.

Juan Carlos Cerrutti, vice-president sales EMEA, said Compaq and Novell have a long history of co-operation.

"We share an installed base, a reseller channel, many certified Compaq accredited system engineers are also certified Novell engineers, and we have a common support infrastructure," he said.

Solutions to be covered during the training include non-stop availability of internet services, access to networked information from any client device, and storage management, Cerrutti said.

Walid Moneimne, general manager Compaq EMEA, claimed Compaq and Novell have been delivering "world-class networking solutions" for more than 18 years.

"These are the strengths Compaq and Novell can offer to help customers bring their e-infrastructures together more quickly and easily," he said.

Last month, Novell announced it was to cut five per cent of its workforce after poor second-quarter results. It reported a Q2 loss of £105m from turnover of £168m.
