HP guns for Dell in PC space

'Top Config' Programme will help HP channel compete better in desktop and workstation market

Hewlett Packard (HP) is set to launch a scheme in the UK which it claims will help its channel compete better with Dell in the desktop and workstation market.

The 'Top Config' Programme, scheduled for pilot launch in July, is intended to streamline the supply chain and make it more cost efficient for both channel players and business customers.

Loay Lawrence, business manager at distributor Ideal, told CRN that the programme is using up to three distributors in the UK, including Ideal, to pilot the scheme.

As a result resellers will be able to order PCs over the web, and specify the components of each machine at the click of a mouse.

The order is then built by HP and shipped either direct to the customer or to the reseller within ten days.

"Resellers can provide customers with built to order 'A' branded machines at a competitive price which will allow them to compete with Dell," Lawrence said, adding that there is scope for value add such as services and consultancy.

Lawrence explained that the scheme will replace HP's previous Channel Assembly Programme and complements HPs Top Value programme.
