Ericsson boss latest in frame for Microsoft top job

Hans Vestberg the latest in a long line of potential candidates linked with the CEO role at software giant

Ericsson chief executive Hans Vestberg has become the latest global company boss linked to the top job at Microsoft, according to sources speaking to Bloomberg.

Since the software giant's current chief exec Steve Ballmer announced he would retire within a year back in the summer, sources close to the process have been tipping Bloomberg off with those they reckon are in the frame.

Microsoft's devices boss Satya Nadella is now deemed a frontrunner along with fellow insider and former Skype boss Tony Bates. Nokia chief Stephen Elop was also rumoured to be in talks, along with Ford boss Alan Mullally, who recently officially ruled himself out of the race as the constant speculation was causing a distraction at Ford.

Before Christmas Microsoft promised that an announcement on Ballmer's successor would be made early this year, but it has done nothing to calm the rumour mill which continues to churn out new names as possible replacements.

Vestberg has worked at Ericsson since 1988 and has held various roles there including head of finance and head of its Mexico division. He was formerly an international advisor to the governer of Guangdong, a province in southern China.

Recently sources have suggested that Microsoft candidates have raised concerns about the continued influence of former boss Bill Gates and Ballmer, should he continue in an advisory role after standing down from the top job.
