VMware unveils hybrid cloud vision to channel

Virtualisation giant uses partner conference to outline its cloud-based services delivery model

VMware used its partner conference to outline its cloud strategy

Virtualisation giant VMware has lifted the lid on how it intends to deliver cloud-based services to its customers.

During VMware’s vForum partner conference in central London this morning, the vendor revealed the firm was backing the “hybrid model” of cloud service delivery.

The model will allow organisations to choose between private and public clouds when it comes to storing data and hosting applications, said the vendor, allowing them to take full control over their IT infrastructure.

Rick Jackson, chief marketing officer at VMware, said the firm’s cloud strategy would provide its partner community with a number of clear benefits.

He said: “The hybrid cloud model can help create a new type of relationship for our channel in that people who traditionally are re-selling hardware and software services will also be able to broker services with external cloud providers."

Jackson said the firm was already building a "strong set of partners" who were becoming cloud service providers, but admitted it was an area of the market that was not for everyone.

He added: "We are by no means recommending that our entire channel go out and become public cloud providers, because of the impact it could have on their competitive edge."
