HDS snaps up NAS player BlueArc

Storage player acquires long-standing OEM partner to exploit digital media growth

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has become the latest storage vendor to hit the acquisition trail by snapping up NAS player BlueArc in an all-cash transaction.

The two firms have been OEM partners since 2006, with HDS incorporating BlueArc's NAS technology into its file and content storage products.

In a missive seen by ChannelWeb and sent to HDS staff yesterday, the vendor said the deal will expand the technical collaboration that has gone on between the pair over the past five years, and "widen the gap" between HDS and its competitors.

The letter also states that file and content is the fastest-growing part of the storage industry today, thanks to the exponential growth of digital media, and made buying BlueArc a must.

"[This announcement] better positions us to provide a broad and integrated solution portfolio to our customers and partners, drive higher revenue and accelerate growth," it reads.

"That said, the integration of two companies is no small undertaking [and] teams from both companies are working very hard to make this process as fast and smooth as possible."

In a further letter, jointly signed by Chris White, BlueArc's vice president of global partner sales, and Mike Walkey, HDS' senior vice president of global partners and alliances, the pair stressed the deal would be good news for BlueArc's partners.

"There will be no change to our current programme or integration agreements during the initial transition phases [and] certification or validation approvals will progress as planned," the letter states.

"In the coming weeks, partners will receive communications on new programmes designed for their success. As we work to combine HDS and BlueArc sales, service and operations, we will continue to provide you with programmes, incentives and solutions that will help you expand your market opportunity," it continued.
