Stone Group gets into bed with Brighton & Sussex NHS Trust

System builder wins deal to install new electronic bed management system across six hospitals

Stone Group has completed the installation of a new electronic bed management system at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH) NHS Trust to help improve efficiency and patient care.

The project – which took three weeks to complete – involved the instalment of around 70 Samsung Large Format Display (LFD) monitors with touch screen capability across all inpatient wards through the trust's two sites in Brighton and Haywards Heath.

It means staff teams can see when the next bed is due and what is outstanding to make it available (see picture), and also includes a traffic light coding system that enables staff to see which patient needs what treatment.

In the past the hospital had used a handwritten white board system along with an electronic desktop programme, which they found difficult to keep updated in real time and took too long to keep aligned with one another, causing delays to patient discharge and progression. Since the installation the process time has been cut by 500 per cent, taking seven to nine minutes instead of the previous three days.

Niki Porter, operational services manager at BSUH, said: "We are delighted with the simplicity, visibility and tidiness of the interactive displays. We needed to increase visibility of patient information and ensure the same information was visible on every desktop throughout the trust to increase efficiencies in each ward and make decision-making easier and quicker. It is helping our nurses focus on what is crucial – while the administrative role is key, our nurses have trained so hard for so long to be able to deliver the standards of care that our patients expect."
