Target hits mark with new server arm

Distributor's new venture, Servers Plus, racks up £1.5m sales in first year

James Yates: We are very competitive on pricing

Distributor Target Components has lauded the success of its nascent server arm after it clocked up £1.5m sales in its first year.

Launched in March 2009, Servers Plus aims to provide consistent stock availability across more than 3,000 product lines from server vendors such as HP, IBM, Lenovo and Fujitsu.

It marks a departure for Castleford-based Target, which has traditionally focused on distributing components to PC assemblers.

Servers Plus business manager James Yates claimed Server Plus had exceeded expectations by reaching 1,000 customers in its first year.

Although Server Plus is a sub-distributor, Yates claimed it can compete on an even footing with tier one outfits such as Arrow ECS and Avnet because it has direct ties with all the vendors.

“Because of the volumes we are taking, and the direct account management, we are still very competitive," he said. "As a reseller we are not tied into any one vendor so can offer the full spectrum not just the brands we have contracts with.”

Components specialist Target also appears to be growing nicely claiming its turnover for calendar 2009 rose to £16.3m, up from £12.3m in 2008. It is expecting to top the £17m turnover barrier for its fiscal year to 31 March.
